NEW  ZEALAND  EAGLE  SPIRIT  JUJITSU

New Zealand Eagle Spirit Jujitsu was founded in January 1999 as a martial arts school with an emphasis on self-protection, and building self-awareness and self-confidence, rather than on competition and sport. The school primarily bases its training syllabus around its original style of Spirit Combat Jujitsu, and was honoured in April 2007 with a visit from the founder of this style, Soke Brian Dossett.

Each grade is based around the students knowledge of ten Forms, or techniques, along with their knowledge and execution of break falls, throws, blocks, kicks, punches, grappling, sparring, kata/pattern, and, at the intermediate/senior level, weapons. Students grade progressively through a series of belted ranks from White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Purple, Blue, Brown, to Black Shodan Ho, Shodan, 1st Dan, 2nd Dan, 3rd Dan, 4th Dan, and so on. The school currently has five active black belts training and teaching : one Juichidan (Junior 1st Dan), two Shodan, one 1st Dan, and one 2nd Dan.

New Zealand Eagle Spirit Jujitsu is more akin to styles of aikijitsu than the more judo orientated systems. The majority of techniques, are “street” orientated rather than “arena” based, focusing on a strong hard-style self-defence aspect. There is a definite emphasis on defensive rather than attack-based elements, where an opponents power is used against them ; this also makes components of this style very suitable for children and women.

In 2005, several instructors and students of the school began training in the Filipino martial arts to develop a more comprehensive weapons curriculum for their school. This syllabus includes work with a single stick, double stick, knife, and stick and dagger. This adds to the other weapons already trained with in the school of nunchaku and bo staff. In December 2007, the school was honoured with a visit from Pangulong Guru Krishna Godhania, the lineage holder of Warriors Eskrima under its founder, Grandmaster Abner Pasa.

New Zealand Eagle Spirit Jujitsu has now reached it's tenth anniversary and it progresses every day with new ideas for training in the hope of giving its students a well-rounded introduction to martial arts, and to develop their characters in to confident, honest, strong, and respectful individuals.
